Apple’s 2026 iPhone lineup is unlike any before it. For the first time, the company split its launch and skipped the standard model entirely. If you missed the announcements, MacRumors has a full event recap, but if you just want to know what to buy, this guide breaks down every phone Apple actually released, with full specs and Australian pricing, so you can work out which one belongs in your pocket.
One thing to clear up first: the regular, more affordable iPhone 18 does not exist yet. Apple has delayed it to spring 2027, when it’ll arrive alongside the iPhone 18e and a second-generation iPhone Air. What launched at the “Surprise and Shine” event on September 9 was three phones: the iPhone 18 Pro, the iPhone 18 Pro Max, and Apple’s first foldable, the iPhone Duo. Here’s everything you need to know about each.
iPhone 18 Pro
The iPhone 18 Pro is the entry point into Apple’s flagship range, and for most people it’s the smart pick. It packs a 6.3-inch display and the entire Pro feature set into the most compact, most affordable body of the three.
At its core is the A20 Pro, which Apple is calling the first 2nm chip in a smartphone. The camera system is the real story, though. Both Pro models introduce a variable aperture on the main 48MP Fusion camera, a genuine first for iPhone, along with new manual aperture and shutter speed controls for anyone who shoots seriously. We break down the Pro camera in more detail separately, but the short version is this is the biggest imaging jump in years. Around the back you get three 48MP Fusion cameras, and on the front an 18MP Center Stage camera. There’s also a smaller Dynamic Island and a redesigned vapor chamber that triples the cooling surface area for better sustained performance.
Battery life is solid for the phone’s compact size, and it comes in Black, Silver, Glacier and Burgundy.

That’s an A$100 increase over last year’s iPhone 17 Pro, and it’s the first year Apple has offered a 2TB tier. Pre-orders open Saturday, 12 September at 10pm AEST, with the phone shipping Friday, 18 September.
iPhone 18 Pro Max
The Pro Max is mechanically almost identical to the Pro, with the same A20 Pro chip, the same variable-aperture camera system and the same storage options, but bigger where it counts. The display grows to 6.9 inches, and the battery jumps to up to 43 hours of video playback, which Apple says is the longest battery life ever in an iPhone.
For a flat A$200 more at every tier, you’re paying purely for the larger screen and the added endurance. Everything else, including the cameras, chip and colours, is shared with the standard Pro. If you watch a lot of video, game on the move, or simply want maximum battery, the Pro Max is worth it. If not, the smaller Pro saves you money without sacrificing capability.

The Pro Max carries the same pre-order and release dates as the Pro: 12 September and 18 September. One practical note: the Pro and Pro Max are different physical sizes, so cases and accessories aren’t interchangeable between them.
iPhone Duo (Apple’s first foldable)
The Duo is the headline act and the biggest change to the iPhone in nearly two decades. It’s a book-style foldable with a 5.4-inch outer display for everyday one-handed use, opening into a 7.6-inch inner screen that Apple says is the largest ever on an iPhone. When fully open, it’s also the thinnest iPhone the company has ever built.
The trade-offs are real, though. The Duo uses Touch ID in the side button rather than Face ID. Its camera is a dual 48MP Fusion setup that tops out at 2x optical-quality zoom, so you lose the Pro Max’s tetraprism telephoto and the variable aperture. There’s no Action Button, and it only works with the standard USB-C Apple Pencil, not the Apple Pencil Pro.
On the build side it’s premium: a Grade 5 titanium frame with a 3D-printed titanium hinge cover, and an IP68 dust and water resistance rating (Apple pointedly noted it’s dust-tight, unlike Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 8). The dual battery is rated for up to 44 hours of video on the outer display and 31 hours on the inner one. And yes, there’s a crease, but Apple’s nano-texture matte finish makes it nearly invisible when you look at the screen head-on.

The Duo runs on the same A20 Pro chip and ships with iOS 27.1 to support its folding-screen software. Unlike the Pro models, it pre-orders later, from 16 October, with a release on 23 October.
How the three compare
Everything shares the A20 Pro chip and the new in-house C2 modem. Where they split is size, cameras, battery and price:

All three also run iOS 27, which lands for everyone on September 14. Its headline feature is Siri AI, a far more capable, conversational assistant that now lives in its own dedicated app and can pull personal context to actually get things done. It’s a big reason even older supported iPhones feel fresh this year, so don’t feel you have to buy the newest model just to get the software.
Which storage tier should you get?
For nearly everyone, 256GB is the sweet spot. The higher tiers got noticeably more expensive this year: jumping from 256GB to 2TB adds a full A$2,400 on either Pro model, which is more than the price of a second base phone. Unless you shoot ProRes video or keep your entire photo library offline, start at 256GB and lean on iCloud for the overflow.
Looking for something cheaper? Consider refurbished
Let’s be honest: these are expensive phones, and the 2026 pricing climbed across the board. Alongside the new models, Apple discontinued the iPhone 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max and bumped prices on the iPhone 16, iPhone 17, iPhone Air and iPhone 17e, which makes the refurbished market more appealing than usual right now.
If the new prices are more than you want to spend, a refurbished iPhone gets you flagship-class cameras and performance for a lot less, with years of iOS updates still ahead of it. It’s worth checking refurbished stock from sellers like Phonebot, JB Hi-Fi and Kogan before you commit to a brand-new handset. You may find an iPhone 17 Pro or 17 Pro Max at a price that makes the maths a lot easier.
