iPhone 8 Specs and Features

Released in September 2017, the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus marked a huge step forward for the iPhone phones. Featuring enhanced internals and a tweaked design, the iPhone 8 blends feature from the iPhone 7 and iPhone X, culminating into something exceptional. Yes, it might not have the fancy features found on the iPhone X. But the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus are solid smartphones that hold their own even by today’s standards. As is tradition, Apple tends to drop its older devices in favour of new devices. The company discontinued the iPhone 8 on April 15, 2020, after launching the second-generation iPhone SE. These prices can drop even lower were you to get it refurbished.

If you are debating about buying the iPhone 8, here’s everything you need to know to make your decision easier.

Size and Design

The iPhone 8 retains the same size as the previous-generation iPhone 7. It comes with a 4.7-inch Retina IPS LCD screen with True Tone. Maintaining thick bezels at both the top and the bottom parts of the device, the iPhone 8 strikingly resembles the iPhone 7 from the front. It measures 138.4 x 67.3 x 7.3 mm, making it slightly larger than the iPhone 7. But that’s barely noticeable. The iPhone 8 is also fractionally heavier by an extra 10g. However, it’s not overbearing, and you should have no problem holding it on your palm.

The iPhone 8 comes with a glass-encased body, unlike its predecessor. The all-glass enclosures are made by combining Gorilla glass and an aluminium frame. This body build is not only great for aesthetic purposes but also affords the iPhone 8 phone wireless charging compatibility.

Like the previous generation, the iPhone 8 is splash, water and dust resistant. It has an IP67 dust/ water resistance rating. The phone is dustproof and can withstand 1 meter (3.3 feet) of water for up to 1hour 30minutes. When it comes to colour options, the iPhone 8 is available in silver, space grey, gold, and product red.

Display

The iPhone 8 features a 4.7-inch Retina IPS LCD, with a resolution of 750 x 1334 pixels, giving a 326 PPI density. These are the same display specs as what is on the iPhone 7. However, Apple did improve the iPhone 8’s brightness and colour representation by adding to it True Tone technology. The True Tone display feature uses an ambient light sensor to change the display colour based on the lighting in the environment to achieve a natural viewing experience. This results in bold colours and beautiful colours, making reading and browsing more comfortable by reducing eyestrain.

iPhone 11 Long Term Review- Should we compare it with iPhone 13?

Processor and Battery Life

The iPhone 8 spots a speedier A11 Bionic chip, which at launch was the most powerful chip ever introduced on a smartphone, giving Android phones a run for their money. The chip has two performance cores that are 25% faster than the A10 Fusion chip on the iPhone 7 and four efficiency cores that are 70% faster. This results in improved speeds when multitasking and handling high-intensive tasks. At its release, the iPhone 8 ran iOS 11. Fortunately, it’s now been upgraded to iOS 14, which affords you features such as picture in picture mode, a new app library, and widgets.

However, the iPhone 8 surprisingly features a smaller battery than the iPhone 7, packing an 1821 mAh non-removable battery. Despite it being smaller, the battery performance is comparable to that of the iPhone 7. The battery life is not that impressive by today’s standards. But it should comfortably last you a whole day on regular use.

Camera

iPhone 11 Long Term Review- Should we compare it with iPhone 13?

Apple didn’t make any radical improvements in the camera department. The iPhone 8 still retains the single-camera experience. You get a 12-megapixel f/1.8 lens setup, similar to what’s on the iPhone 7. However, Apple gave the camera a bump by making the sensor larger and the software smarter. This allows it to deliver decent shots. The iPhone 8 camera can also shoot 4K video at 60fps and 240fps slow-motion recording at 1080p. On the front, you will get a 7MP camera as on the iPhone 7. The front camera is capable of full HD video recording, and it comes with a screen flash.

Conclusion

Despite there being newer options with better specs, the iPhone 8 is still a superbly capably handset that is worth buying in 2022. If you are looking for a powerful, budget-friendly handset, then you should consider getting the iPhone 8.
