iPhone 13 Pro is one of the latest phones on the block. Thus, owners of an iPhone 12 Pro Max, may find themselves wondering whether it is time to upgrade to an iPhone 13 Pro or retain the older model. In this article, we take a look at the two phones and try to figure out whether the newer 13 Pro may be worth it or not.
Design
Both the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max have similar looks. They both have flat sides, with a stainless steel frame and a matte finish ceramic shield toughened glass on the back that is meant to be scratch-proof. The phones are also heavier than the former iPhones in the Apple line.
However, this is where the similarities end for these two phones. The iPhone 13 Pro is smaller than the iPhone 12 Pro Max, with the latter having a 6.7-inch screen compared to the former’s 6.1-inch screen. Furthermore, while both do have Face ID, the 13 pro has a smaller screen notch as compared to the 12 pro max. A trend that is also reflected in the iPhone 13 Pro Max.
The iPhone 13 Pro has also included a new colour, the Sierra Blue. This replaces the Pacific Blue that is offered with the iPhone 12 Pro Max. The phones are also offered in gold, silver, and graphite.
Display
The phones have a similar OLED screen. However, the screens differ in size with the 13 Pro having a smaller screen of 6.1 inches to the 12 Pro Max’s 6.7-inch screen. The 12 Pro Max is the biggest screen put on an iPhone ever, and the only screen that compares to it is the screen on the iPhone 13 Pro Max. they also have different resolutions with the 13 Pro having a resolution of 2532×1170 pixels and 12 Pro Max having a resolution of 2778×1284 pixels.
The iPhone 13 Pro also has a bigger refresh rate of 120Hz. This simply means that the screen refreshes 120 times every second. The 12 Pro Max, on the other hand, has a refresh rate of 60Hz. The bigger refresh rate on the 13 Pro makes interacting with iPhone’s screen much smoother, especially when it comes to scrolling and gaming.
Furthermore, with the ProMotion feature, the refresh rate can switch lower depending on the task being done on the iPhone. Thus saving power. Therefore when a user is doing a task like reading a book on their phone, the refresh rate could go down to 10Hz, ergo saving more power.
Camera
Both phones have three 12mp cameras, a standard wide camera, an ultra-wide camera, and a telephoto camera. Nonetheless, the cameras on the iPhone 13 Pro have much better sensors. The iPhone 13 Pro’s standard wide camera has a sensor with an f/1.5 lens, the ultra-wide camera has an f/1.8 aperture for a 120-degree field of view and a 77mm telephoto that offers 3× optical zoom. The apertures on these cameras allow more light to enter the camera. Hence reducing noise in the photos and enabling better-detailed photos. The camera also has a LiDAR sensor which helps create better portraits on the wide camera in night mode.
On the video side, the iPhone 13 Pro has a new mode called the Cinematic mode that is astounding. This mode allows users to do focus tracking that enables users to change focus from another during a continuous shot.
The iPhone 12 Pro Max’s standard wide camera has a sensor with an f/1.6 lens, an ultra-wide camera with an f/2.4 aperture for a 120-degree wide field of view, and a 65 mm telephoto offering 2.5× optical zoom. The cameras also have a LiDAR sensor that also allows for better portrait photos in night mode.

Processing Performance
While both these phones have recorded fast processing speeds, they each use two different Apple chips. The iPhone 13 Pro has the newer A15 Bionic chip, while the iPhone 12 Pro Max has the A14 Bionic chip. The A15 Bionic chip has 6GB RAM, with a six-core CPU, 16 core neural engine, and a five core GPU with a CPU frequency of 3.22 GHz. The A14 Bionic chip also has 6GB RAM, with a six-core CPU, 16 core neural engine, and a five core GPU. However, the A14 Bionic chip has a CPU frequency of 2.99GHz. The A15 chip has a wider cache and can perform operations faster than the A14 chip.
Final Verdict
Now, while both phones do have great merits, the iPhone 13 Pro does beat out the iPhone 12 Max when it comes to the camera, display, and processing power. Furthermore, its size may be more hand-friendly to most people. Nonetheless, if you prefer bigger phones then the 12 Pro Max is a definite plus. Nevertheless, if you would wish to upgrade your phone, then the iPhone 13 Pro is worth the upgrade.
